Our story started in 1967 when Barry Scott founded Dictating and Adding Machine Service, later shortened to D.A.M.S, and eventually becoming Dams Furniture.

The 60’s & 70’s


What began in 1967 as a smallLiverpool-based dictating and adding machine sales and repair shop soonrevealed a growing need for quality office furniture in the local market.

Spotting this opportunity,Barry—supported by his brother Derek—started designing and making officefurniture at weekends, selling it from the shop during the week. What startedas a side project quickly became the foundation of the business we know today.

The 80's & 90's


Growing demand and an entrepreneurial spirit saw the company shift away from retail, focusing instead on manufacturing and wholesaling.

In 1981, Dams relocated to Knowsley to expand production and storage capacity. Soon after, the launch of the Rhino collection of flat-packed office furniture helped reshape the industry. Continued investment followed, with production scaling further as upholstery was added to the growing portfolio.

The Millenium

Dams kicked off the new millennium with its largest single investment to date: a purpose-built, state-of-the-art 125,000 sq ft distribution centre. Located alongside the production facility, this major development brought a previously multi-site operation together onto one site, increasing capacity by over 50%.


Over the next 20 years, the company continued to invest in growth—securing additional land and expanding its operations with new production facilities and warehousing, all on the same site. Today, the operation spans well over 300,000 sq ft.

Today, Dams is the UK’s only true manufacturing wholesaler of office furniture. Our team of over 350 people supports an extensive range of more than 15,000 products, all backed by market-leading service options.
In 2024, Re.think was launched, providing a sustainable solution for both packaging and end-of-life furniture, reinforcing our commitment to a more responsible future.
