Sonae is committed to meeting its legal (environmental) responsibilities and the Knowsley site operates an Environmental Management System (EMS) to the ISO 14001 standard (Certification/Quality). The Knowsley site also adheres to a Sonae Industria Group Environmental Policy.
The Knowsley plant which opened in July 2000 was specifically designed to use recycled wood fibre. Currently around 96% of material used at Knowsley is recycled.
By reclaiming the raw materials from the urban environment or ‘Urban Forest’ Dams & Sonae are reducing the strains placed upon the World’s forests and jungles alike.

Sonae have processed in excess of 2 million tonnes of waste wood and are the UK’s largest recycler of waste wood material.
It is estimated that each year up to 420,000 tonnes of waste wood is produced by households, or deposited at civic amenity sites in the UK. Packaging (pallets and crates) produce a further 670,000 tonnes, and construction and demolition 750,000 tonnes.
